The Independent State is the largest single region within Western Glashia. It is bordered by the Northern and Inner Seas to the north, the newly established Arvandian Commonwealth and the Kingdoms of Langington and Aarenki to the east, the Sea of Heredia to the south, and the nations of Tsan and Cannovan to the west. Within the Independent State lay the Shortec Range, the Kienkin Forest, the Great Plains of Western Glashia, and the Tenet Woods and Lake Do-eschan, the latter two falling under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Langington.
The Independent State of Western Glashia does not have one ruler, but a multitude of rulers keeping tabs over smaller baronies, duchies, and independent regoins, the number of which exceeding one hundred and changing every day. The borders between these smaller regions seem to change daily as well and are very hard to keep track of for the scribes at the University of Scholars. Within these smaller states are ruling dukes, barons, and lords, some of which are related to the rulers and kings of the other kingdoms and nations of Western Glashia. For example, a small wooded area surrounding a lake in the southern region of the Independent State is governed by a Fpathen king related to Kyrm of the Second Moon, Guardian of the Fifth House of the Council of Twelve in the nation of Jahhne. Because of this form of governing within the Independent State, large bands of humanoids and humans bent on evil and destruction run rampant, with some of the smaller regions unable to cope with their numbers. Large orcish cities have been built within the confines of the Shortec Range, and an untold number of battles have ensued inside Freeman's Gap, a stretch of foothills separating the Shortec Range and the populations of orcs and goblinkind, and the Tsan Range and the nation of the Dervatear.
Despite this independent form of governing, the Independent State is considered rather relaxing for those seeking to settle down in one of the larger, more well-defended regions. Cities such as Allroads and Swordhaven are popular among traders and merchants heading to or from Cannovan, with the population of Allroads fluctuating daily due to the tremendous amount of traffic this city has. Because of its location, all major roads through the Independent State pass through Allroads, hence its name.
The Independent State is a provider of many resources much needed throughout Western Glashia, namely foodstuffs. Vast fields of corn and wheat cover much of the Great Plains, as do massive herds of cattle and sheep. One of the major events of the Independent State is the annual cattle drive that starts in Cannovan and makes it way through the Independent State, stopping in Allroads before moving on to the Kingdom of Langington and the slaughterhouses that dot the coast of Lake Gideon.
Another major resource that is harvested from the Independent State is the mineral known as tow-hak, or blackstone, to the Dervatear that mine it. Within a massive crater located in the Tenet Woods is what seems to be an unlimited source of this blackstone, a mineral that is purchased by the barons and dukes of the Independent State, as well as the kings and rulers of the other nations. The blackstone has been found to burn more slowly than coal while giving off a tremendous amount of heat, something much needed in the vast castles and keeps of the rulers of Western Glashia. The blackstone is extremely expensive, since it has only been found in one place throughout all of Western Glashia, and is constantly guarded by an entire Dervatear army, hand-picked by King Dommic Stonefast of the nation of Tsan himself.
